The Development of This Work

This work evolved through research, case writing, and teaching in close engagement with organizations and institutions—moving from ecological insight into application and ultimately into structured frameworks for circular and regenerative business.

Grounded in In-Company Research Across Global Firms

This work was grounded in research with companies pioneering circular product design and new business models. Through in-company research, case writing, and executive teaching, I discovered how the translation ecological principles into rethinking materials, value chains, and product lifecycles.

Developed in Harvard Business Review

The Biosphere Rules were first introduced to a managerial audience in Harvard Business Review, articulating how ecological principles can guide business strategy. These ideas were then expanded into a full-length treatment in the HBR book Earth, Inc., further developing the implications for organizations seeking to design circular and regenerative systems..

Extended through California Management Review

This work was further developed through research and publication in California Management Review, including a video feature that brought the Biosphere Rules to a broader executive audience. It extends the framework into the domain of digital innovation—exploring how technologies such as 3D printing enable new forms of circular product design and business models..
